Ion Man: Cambridge entrepreneur honoured in California

Dr Ramsey Faragher, founder and CEO of Cambridge start-up FocalPoint Positioning, has been awarded the Per Enge Early Achievement Award for outstanding innovations in mobile positioning and navigation by the Institute of Navigation (ION) at its annual awards in San Diego, California.

The award recognises Dr Faragher’s work on the patented Supercorrelation technology – which it hailed as “pioneering and revolutionary” in the field of positioning.

Supercorrelation dramatically transforms GPS capability and availability, especially in urban areas and indoors. Applications include indoor wayfinding, accurate fitness wearables, autonomous vehicles and last metre services. Supercorrelation was developed in Cambridge by Dr Faragher, who then founded FocalPoint Positioning to commercialise the technology. The company has since successfully built two products.

The Per Enge Early Achievement Award is presented in recognition of outstanding contributions made early in one’s career and it follows on the heels of Ramsey’s GPS World signals leadership award, also for the groundbreaking SuperCorrelation technology.

The ION Annual Awards Program is sponsored by The Institute of Navigation to recognise individuals making significant contributions or demonstrating outstanding performance relating to the art and science of navigation.

Cambridge University Fellow Dr Faragher said: “I’m thrilled and honoured to be recognised by the ION and that our revolutionary SuperCorrelation technology has the backing of this global body.

“We’re looking forward to bringing the benefits of super accurate positioning solutions of it to the smartphones, wearables and vehicles of the future. We continue to push the boundaries of what this new technology can achieve.”
